The American University Law Review is the flagship journal at the Washington College of Law and membership is highly selective. The Law Review typically extends invitations to between fifty and fifty-five students each year. Most offers are extended to students who compete in the spring Write-On Competition and to students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance during their 1L year. The Law Review also extends a select number of invitations to students who transfer to the Washington College of Law and compete in the fall Transfer Write-On Competition.

Both the spring Write-On Competition and the fall Transfer Write-On Competition require participants to complete a case note that analyzes a legal question using materials provided to them by the Law Review. The Law Review extends invitations to students who write case notes that demonstrate superior legal analysis, organization, style, and footnote development.
